Have you heard of the Semicolon Project? I first saw it on twitter and really love the concept of it and what the semicolon that so many people are getting tattooed on their wrist mean. I was visiting their site today in light of Robin Williams passing and thinking more about what we can do to help prevent the deaths of so many to suicide. I mean I get it, I do.People don't want to end thier lives they JUST want to stop the pain.
People don't want to end their lives they JUST want to stop the pain.
Yesterday, while expressing myself through art, and sharing the creative process with two other creatives; naturally we talked about my desire to use Unbelievably Human to give voice to the pain through art,self- expression and still finding the zeal to live.
I'm not talking just people who have mental illness but people who just have had a hard go of it and feel like life has become too much. While we were creating, they started sharing with me how they'd been there how they'd wondered would they even be missed. (one reason, I hand out hearts, my love, to remind people they are not invisible <3)
Then we got the news about Robin Williams. Someone we all admire for his ability to make us laugh, cry and think about living with zeal. Who didn't love this guy. He'll certainly be missed. It got me to thinking about The Semicolon Project.
A semicolon represents a sentence the author could've of ended, but chose not to. The author is you and the sentence is the your life.
The Semicolon Project is a Non-Profit Organization dedicated to presenting hope, help, and support to the people and communities suffering from mental health issues. They address depression, anxiety, self-harm, addiction, and suicide. They aim to inspire and encourage people to do one of the hardest things imaginable: ask for help when they need it most [Their mission statement]. (I've linked to both the U.S. Semicolon Project and the U.K. version!)
One thing that I love is that as this movement took up speed so did people's expression of their support of it. I've shared a few of the images that made me smile, made sense, or are powerful! After all, here at Unbelievably Human, we are all about EXPRESSION through HE[ART]™, and this certainly is HE[ART]™. To see more go here, here, and here.
Have you heard of this movement? Would you get the tattoo? Have you reminded ANYONE lately to keep adding the semi colon? You really never know what a person is experiencing or going through so be sure to at least give a warm eye contact smile.
