Heart to Heart with: Siobhan of Be Free Project 52 books in a Year!

be free project SiobhanBOOKS!!! Have been some of my best friends! I started voraciously reading at the age of 5. So much so that I still hold the title of the youngest person to ever win the city wide book reading challenge (and it’s not a small city folks!). This is one of my proudest accomplishments, LOL.

Reading opened my world and my imagination to endless possibilities. It also gave me perspectives and lessons that I would not have necessarily encountered in my day to day life. Hands down, books are what have inspired my desire for adventure in life.

When I discovered Siobhan of Be Free Project (Personal Life Coach & Consultant ), on Instagram, she became a woman after my own heart. She created The 52 Books in a Year Challenge to push herself to read more in 2014, with a specific focus on non-fiction books, to grow and nourish her brain as an entrepreneur.  Inspired-RIGHT! I had to know more about this challenge! And her passion behind it! Here’s what she shared !

What about books have helped give you new perspective?  

I have always enjoyed reading since I was a young girl. Reading helped me escape from my dysfunctional reality growing up. I LOVED going to the library having the opportunity to choose from tons of books to read. I could get lost in the library for hours. When I was younger I was a huge fan of Sweet Valley High, Babysitter’s Club and Judy Blume books. As I matured I began reading Terry McMillian, Eric Jerome Dickey, Danielle Steele, Bernice McFadden and Zora Neal Hurston.

Reading has definitely given me a new perspective on life and what it means to be successful in every area of my life. Reading develops your mind, helps you discover new things, expose you to new information and simply improves your understanding about life.

This year I have challenged myself to read only non-fiction books to gain a better understanding on what it means to be an entrepreneur and developing myself as an individual. This challenge has helped me create new habits, overcome procrastination (still working on this one), and being fearless to pursue my dreams no matter what.

For example after reading Success through Stillness by Russell Simmons, I have now incorporated meditation in my daily routine to get more in tuned with my inner-self.

How have books helped give you new perspectives as you've navigated life's ups and downs, and what motivated you to start the book challenge and then invite others?

I am learning so much about myself as I challenge myself to read more with a specific focus on non fiction books. There is so much to learn and I hear often that successful people are life-long learners. I want to fill my brain with information that can help me grow as an entrepreneur and develop me as an individual. Then I can use the knowledge and information that I have to share with someone else.

I have learned that the voice in my head that creates self-doubt, fear and worry is not who I really am. I have the power to quiet my inner voice and create new habits so that I can overcome and pursue my dreams. I’ve also learned that my dreams can become my reality. I have the power to create the life I desire to live- which is a “free” life as long as I believe that it is possible. I also have to consistently think positive and not allow negative thoughts or energy in my life. It’s definitely a process but I am embracing my journey.

The books that I have read so far has opened my mind so much as it relates to personal growth and entrepreneurship. I realize that by pursuing my dream I am positioning myself to help so many people just by using my natural gifts. Also reading has motivated me to be free and comfortable in my own skin and appreciate my strengths and weaknesses.

Actually believe it or not, Liv,  you motivated me to start the challenge. When I posted on Instagram what I was doing you asked me “Will you have a check in or some sorta support network to stay on point? Then I started thinking to myself why not encourage others to read more. So, thank you for the idea!

How far into it are you?  

I have read 37 books so far. The goal is to read 52 non fiction books by the end of the year.

What are your end desires for yourself personally and the people invited to share in the journey?

Personally I want to continue to educate and learn as much as I can as a life coach. It’s essential that I am well informed and knowledgeable in order to serve my clients’ needs. I want to inspire others to pursue their dreams and know that it is possible to create the life you desire to live.

I am extremely passionate about reading all I can because I know that when I read books that are going to grow me as an individual then I can speak better on specific subjects. I really enjoy learning and its important that I set the right example for my children letting them know that knowledge is powerful and it starts by simply picking up a book.

My ultimate goal for the BFP Community and anyone reading this is to simply read more. Turn off the TV for an hour, get off the Internet and pick up a book and nourish your brain.

What are some things that you are doing time management wise to accomplish the goal?

Time management is a struggle for me because I have so much on my plate.  However in order to complete a book in a week, I just divide the # of pages in the book by 7 (days in week) and that’s how much I need to read each day. That has really helped me out. If I’m reading a book with a lot of pages then I’ll read half in the morning and half in the evening.

I also suggest that if you struggle with sitting down to read then try audio books.

Two Books that I highly recommend you read are:

Success Through Stillness by Russell Simmons

Russell simplifies the meditation process and debunks many of the myths that are associated with meditation.  He also explains that if you meditate for at least 20 minutes twice per day you will have greater clarity, focus, and a healthier mind and body.

Write it Down Make it Happen by Henriette  Anne Klauser

This is a MUST read book if you want to begin to change your life and make your dreams your reality.  It's essential that you begin to write your thoughts, dreams, and fears down.
